Magdalena Bay
Imaginal Disk (2024)
A concept album built around the biological phenomenon of imaginal discs in insect larvae. During metamorphosis, the larva does not gradually become a butterfly. It dissolves almost entirely inside the chrysalis, and hidden discs of undifferentiated cells grow into the adult form. Magdalena Bay uses this as a model for identity. The album follows a character named True, who receives an implanted Imaginal Disk meant to construct her ideal self, rejects it, and has to figure out who she actually is. The question it keeps asking: how much of you is you, and how much is programming?
